Greetings University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Faculty & Students,

Please join the science team of the global HIPPO field campaign on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 3pm-5pm, at the NCAR’s Research Aviation Facility in Broomfield, CO to learn about the atmospheric research that is being conducted using the NSF/NCAR Gulfstream-V (G-V).

The global HIAPER Pole-toPole Observation of Greenhouse Gases and the Carbon Cycle (HIPPO) campaign will be the most comprehensive dataset of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the atmosphere with profiles from the Arctic to the Antarctic and from the surface of the Earth to the lower stratosphere. The field data offer a rare opportunity to see how pollution impacts remote areas of the globe and how it is chemically transformed in the atmosphere, as well as identify where potential CO2 sinks reside. Find more information on the HIPPO website.

University and college students are welcome to join us for the afternoon to learn more about the HIPPO project while visiting the NSF/NCAR G-V at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, just before it leaves for the month long field campaign on March 22. Project scientists and coordinators will be explaining more about the project, the implications that this study has on the research of climate change, as well as show you the G-V, and the on-board instruments and data systems.

This is a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to visit this instrumented aircraft specially designed for cutting edge atmospheric research. Students interested in a broad range of disciplines including meteorology, ecology, chemistry, physics, software development, and engineering will benefit from this experiential learning opportunity.

Please post the attached PDF in your department, and send this email to any undergraduate and graduate students who may be interested. Kindly RSVP to hippoinfo@ucar.edu to reserve a spot.

Please note, this event is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as aircraft maintenance issues.
